Assistance for Net Zero

We have invited the top 209 highest fossil fuel consuming Trusts to attend the initial support programme; to collaborate, share knowledge, resources and identify common solutions to address this, to move towards a net zero future

The resource will help Trusts in the ways highlighted below:

  1. Identify the best net zero route for your Trust so as to assist your team write your Heat Decarbonisation plans (due next March)
  2. Assist with costing projects and business cases to the board and mitigate risk
  3. Introduce your team to experts in the relevant field so that your team can understand the technology and any site conversion required
  4. Allow selected members of your team to work alongside and collaborate with their peers in this journey
  5. Understand procurement routes that can support the implementation of such services as geothermal energy, hydrogen conversion or partake in shared offsite generation
  6. Share technical, legal and project management support for the transition
  7. Participate or share in the learnings from gas decarbonisation technology trials being set up now
  8. Learn from the initial 5 Trusts currently procuring geothermal energy
  9. Share in centralised technical, contractual and performance management tools and documents through the process

Invitees may:

  • Join Teams calls where the process will be explained and questions taken (July)
  • Participate in our technology explanations (August and September)
  • Meet the stakeholders in face-to-face workshops explaining the route to net zero for the various technology options (IHEEM workshops in October)
  • Join a technology route and programme of your choice to work to net zero for your Trust for 2032

The initial explanations and technology explanations are set out in 3 phases:

July Kick-off Meetings

The kick-off sessions are 13th and 26th July at 12h30 each for a nominal 45 minutes via Teams (same presentation for each, will be recorded, two dates so that people have a choice)

Kick-off Meetings and Explanation of the decarbonisation resource(s):

  • Reminder of the net zero plan requirements, dates and targets
  • Introduction to the national mapping of 209 sites and their opportunities for net zero
  • Cadent to explain the hydrogen opportunity as an exemplar of the various net zero alternatives
  • British Geological Survey to explain the opportunities that have come through running all 209 site locations through the BGS database
  • Introduction to a possible implementation programme
  • Explanation of the initial meetings and workshops and the meetings in August/ September and IHEEM in October
Engagement Meetings August and September Teams calls all at 12h30, invitations to follow

3rd August – North West Hydrogen opportunity ( Hynet )
10th August – Geothermal opportunity for nearly half the 209 largest energy users in the NHS
17th August – District heating
24th August – East Coast Hydrogen opportunity
31st August – decarbonisation of gas at the point of use trials

IHEEM Workshops for Face-to-Face Technology Sessions

Days 1 and 2 at IHEEM on the 10th and 11th October.
The workshops are for Trust responsible persons wishing to continue with the collaboration.
There will be technology presentations in the Energy Theatre of the conference floor for other interested parties

Clive Nattrass is the programme manager of NHPower, appointed by a taskforce of governmental, Iheem, and NHS representatives to design and implement a programme to get the NHS to net zero in fossil fuels. Clive has a pedigree in this field having founded the Carbon and Energy Fund, which is the main route to energy infrastructure improvement in the NHS.
